Second Track Meet of the Year!

The SPMS track and field team has been training 3 to 5 hours a week. The week before spring break, on March 28, 2019, the team competed in a track meet at South Pasadena High School against other schools in the 210 league. Our track team placed second against Huntington, the school to beat.

At 2:20 PM on April 11, 2019, all the track athletes left class early to arrive to San Marino High School on time. Thankfully, eight parent drivers volunteered to drive our team to San Marino. At the beginning of the meet, the team started off with a run around the track and then warmed up with stretches on the field.

As the first race began, the runners lined up and prepared for the 100 meter dash. Other races that were run were the 200, 400, 800, and 1600 meter runs. The South Pasadena team has been working very hard and they are very strong in their individual races. Another important category of races for many runners were the relays. Over the course of about two weeks that relay teams have been practicing baton handoff drills. The goal of the drills were to help the team have a fast and smooth transition between each athlete.

At the start of each relay race including the 4x200, 4x100, and 4x400, the runners line up on the track. At the sound of the gun, the first athlete runs and passes it onto the next athlete. The 6th and 7th grade girls and boys did a great job placing in the top three during relays. Additionally, the 8th grade boys and girls did an excellent job working together in the relays.

Every Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday the track team continues to meet and improve the skills. Recently the middle distance runners have run their longest run yet, a 2 mile run to Oneonta Congregational Church and back. Also, the short distance sprinters practice running on our school track to beat their record times. The field event team practices their jumping and shot put in the lower field of our school.

The SPMS track team is preparing to run in league finals on May 9, 2019. GO TIGERS!
